Alice (Cragun) Sturgeon, age 86, passed away on Sunday, April 25, 2010 at her residence at Morning Pointe in Franklin. She was a longtime resident of Franklin. She was born on September 4, 1923 in Whitestown, Indiana to Orla and Arminta (Harsin) Cragun. She married Kedric Sturgeon of Marengo at Clarksville on September 17, 1946. He preceded her in passing in February, 1984. Survivors include foster son Donald (Angie) Sweeney of Greenwood; granddaughter Kristie Sweeney of Indianapolis; grandson Andrew Jay Sweeney of Greenwood; great-granddaughter Kira Goins; nephews Jack Giles of Brownsburg and Lyle Giles of Mooresville; and nieces Laura Blott of Fort Wayne and Mary Strom of Sierra Vista, Arizona and friend Dr. James Cornelison, Jr. of Barrington, Rhode Island who lived with Mr. and Mrs. Sturgeon when he attended Franklin College. She was preceded in death by sisters, Clarissa, Melvina and Geneva and brother James Cragun. Alice was a 1942 graduate of Whitestown High School and a 1946 graduate of Central Normal College in Danville. She was a school teacher having taught in Business for thirty-nine years. She taught at Avon High School for one year; Union High School for fifteen years and Franklin Community High School for twenty-three years, retiring in 1986. She attended Grace United Methodist Church in Franklin where she was a member of the Naomi Circle. She was a member of the Indiana State Teachers Retirement Association and the Johnson County Teachers Retirement Association. She also was a member of The Delta Kappa Gamma International Sorority and the Alpha Tau Sorority, local in Johnson and Shelby Counties where she was one of the co-founders. She served as treasurer for forty-two years. She was a member of the United States Trotter and Racing Association as well as the Indiana Trotter and Racing Association. A service will be conducted on Thursday, April 29, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 North Morton Street, (U.S. 31 North) in Franklin. Friends may call on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association and/or the American Cancer Society.
