Unie J. Brooks, age 84, passed away on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at the Franklin United Methodist Community in Franklin. Unie was a resident of Nineveh, Indiana for over sixty years. He was born on March 29, 1926 in Hanover, Indiana to Unie H. and Elva Wyne (Mitchell) Brooks. Unie was married for sixty-four years to Olivia (Lister) Brooks who lovingly survives in Nineveh. He is also survived by daughter Pam and husband Steve Millikan; son Mark and wife Judy Brooks; grandchildren Kyle and wife Christine Brooks, Todd and wife Jennifer Brooks, Leah Millikan and Andrea and husband Derek Perry; and great- grandchildren Jacob Brooks, Stephen Brooks, Catherine Brooks, Cameron, Ethan, Grace and Gavin Brooks, Drew Brown, Ashlie Brown and Oaklee Perry. Unie is also survived by nieces and nephews, with special acknowledgement to Linda Kay Burton for her loving care during the extended illness. He was preceded in passing by brothers Charles Thomas Brooks and George W. Brooks and sisters Edna Morgan and Doris Stephen. He attended school in Hanover, Indiana. Unie was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp, serving during World War II. After discharging from the U.S. Marine Corp, Unie worked for Kellams, Alter and Roberson Chevrolet in Edinburgh for over thirty years. Later he was employed as Superintendent at the Prince's Lakes Water Company, retiring after nineteen years. Unie was a member of Nineveh Christian Church for fifty-eight years. He served as an elder, trustee, and Chairman of the Board for twenty-seven years. He was a founding member of the establishment of the Nineveh Fire Department in 1955. Unie served as a fireman, officer and chief for fourteen years. He received an award for serving on the fire department for fifty years, from 1955 to 2005. He was also a member of the Johnson County Firefighters Association where he was an active member from 1962 to the early 90's. He served as the chaplain, vice-president, president and co-chief throughout those years. He was a member of the Double YY Saddle Club, serving as an officer for many years. He served as trail boss for countless years. He was a member of the Johnson County Sheriff's Horse Patrol. He served on the Johnson County Park Board and served on the Pan Am Games Steering Committee. He was a member of the Nineveh Masonic Lodge F & A M in Nineveh. He was also a member of the Edinburgh American Legion. Unie received the Distinguished Hoosier Award in 2003, and the VanValer Award. He served as Co-Grand Marshall of the annual Nineveh Festival in 2008. He enjoyed spending time with his family, camping and horseback riding. Pastor Tom Knight will conduct a service on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at 10:30am at Nineveh Christian Church, 1231 E. 775 S., Nineveh, Indiana. Friends may call on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 from 2-8pm at Flinn & Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 North Morton Street, (U.S. 31 North) in Franklin. Burial will be at Nineveh Cemetery in Nineveh, Indiana In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Nineveh Christian Church, 1231 E. 775 S., Nineveh, Indiana 46164.
